Octyltrimethoxysilane is an organosilicon compound with the chemical formula C₁₁H₂₆O₃Si and CAS No. 3069-40-7. It appears as a colorless, transparent liquid at room temperature. Soluble in common non-polar organic solvents, it hydrolyzes upon contact with water to form silanol groups, which subsequently condense to create siloxane bonds. It is primarily used as a surface treatment agent and silane coupling agent. By reacting with hydroxyl groups on the surfaces of inorganic materials such as glass, metals, and ceramics, it forms an organic-inorganic interfacial layer. Typical applications include water repellents in construction, protective coatings (forming hydrophobic layers on substrates to prevent water penetration and corrosion by acids or alkalis), surface modifiers for inorganic fillers (improving filler dispersion in plastics and rubber), and pigment dispersants.
